Start with access and working space
Measure gates, side yards, alleys, interior openings and any other restriction the machine must pass through. Then look at the space available once the excavator is positioned. A machine can technically fit into a site and still be difficult to use if the upper structure, counterweight or boom needs more room than the work area provides.
Zero-tail or reduced-tail configurations can be valuable where the machine works close to walls, traffic, landscaping or other equipment. You still need enough stability and hydraulic performance for the work, so use the tightest recurring job as a design constraint rather than choosing on width alone.

Define the digging and lifting work
Write down the tasks the excavator performs most often: trenching, irrigation, utilities, footings, demolition, landscaping, material handling or loading. Digging depth and reach matter, but so do breakout force, stability and control near the edge of the working envelope.
If the machine will frequently lift pipe, structures, attachments or other materials, discuss those requirements specifically. A machine that is excellent for shallow trenching may not be the best choice for repeated lifting or deeper utility work.
Plan attachments before you buy
Buckets, hydraulic breakers, augers, thumbs and specialty tools may require specific hydraulic flow, couplers, plumbing or controls. It is easier to specify those requirements during the equipment decision than to discover later that the machine needs additional work to run a planned attachment.
If several crews share equipment, standardizing couplers and common attachments can reduce setup time and simplify purchasing.
Think about transport and daily logistics
Compact equipment often earns its value by moving from one job to the next. Verify the complete transport plan, including the machine, attachments, trailer and towing vehicle. Legal transport requirements vary, so check the exact truck-and-trailer combination your business uses.
Also consider loading height, tie-down access and where attachments ride. Small logistical friction repeated every day can erase some of the productivity advantage of a compact machine.
Evaluate the operator experience and support
Controls, visibility, entry and exit, seat comfort and service access matter when the machine runs for hours at a time. Have the people who will actually operate the excavator sit in it and, when possible, run it through representative tasks.
Look beyond the purchase itself. Ask how parts are sourced, where the machine can be serviced, whether field support is available and how quickly routine maintenance items can be obtained.
